Kent County Constabulary polices an area of 1,442 square miles in the south-east corner of the United Kingdom. The County is divided into nine Policing areas each commanded by a Police Superintendent who has operational responsibility for policing their Area. Kent Police has 4 Broad Policing Themes, one being:- Force Development "to maintain the integrity, quality and effectiveness of policing services". In order to initiate this theme, Kent Police have taken the steps to improve efficiency and effectiveness within their services, by implementing 400 lines (channels) of Voice recording. The solution we chose to offer Kent Police was the Orion Digital Voice Recording System. This equipment records all incoming and outgoing telephone and radio calls, providing recordings of all 999 calls, VMS and ICS radio stations. Phone calls are recorded to a large capacity online database that holds up-to three months worth of calls. This allows recent calls to be found instantly. Calls over three months, which are usually only required for court evidence, can be found on archive DVD disks. A unique media reference, attached to each call, helps locate the DVD that stores the specific calls required for the court case. PC Doug Stitt of the Tape Retention Department says "Search & retrieval is simple and quick. On previous systems, it could take all day to find the relevant recording". The Computertel Orion will search a database of 100,000 calls in less than one second. On Line Storage capacity is unlimited. Phase 1 migration of all the Kent policing areas into the new, purpose built Force Control Centre (FCC), based at Maidstone HQ, has now been successfully completed. Providing Solutions to Meet Client Requirements Steve Baldwin, Project Manager of the FCC program, says "We were limited with budget and the Computertel solution was the most comprehensive & cost effective recording system on the market. Our initial requirements were exceeded and Computertel accommodated our phased approach to increase and adapt the system for our changing requirements. They were able to offer impartial, constructive advise that helped us make the right decision". Future projects that Kent Police are looking to achieve is to integrate their CAD/OIS system with the Voice Recorder, so incident/crime numbers can be automatically input into the recorder database. This will allow all recordings associated with this incident or crime number, to be quickly found and ready for playback. Kent Police's other objective is to have the Voice Recorder integrated with their PABX, via a CTI link. This will allow searches & filters by collar number and/or ACD login.
